The Province of British Columbia has passed a new piece of legislation, the Pay Transparency Act (“PTA”), which came into effect on November 1, 2023. Under the PTA, employers in BC will be required to include the expected pay or the expected pay range for a specific job opportunity that they advertise publicly. The provisions of the PTA apply to UBC when UBC posts jobs on behalf of other employers. This would include jobs posted for co-op programs and other initiatives where faculties post job opportunities available to students, such as faculty career centres. As such, Faculties and other UBC units should ensure that all of the positions they post meet the requirements of the PTA.
You can contact the BC Pay Transparency Office directly (PayTransparency@gov.bc.ca) for more information. Please let us know if you have any specific concerns regarding posting salaries/salary ranges for your upcoming co-op roles.
These figures include salaries from industry positions within Canada and do not show the variances between small and large companies. Please note: our minimum salary is listed at or above minimum wage*, with students working 37.5 hours per week.
*In British Columbia, minimum wages have historically increased on June 1st of each year.
