APPLY FOR CO-OP

Co-op is a competitive program and acceptance is not guaranteed. Application for admission to co-op occurs once per year. The application period begins in early August and closes in mid-September. The exact dates of the application period are posted in May.

Eligibility and General Requirements

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

  • Bachelor of Applied Science students must have a Year Level / Class Standing 2 or 3 for the upcoming Winter session AND be placed in an engineering discipline
  • Bachelor of Design must have Year Level / Class Standing 3 for the upcoming Winter session
  • Must be registered as a full-time student for both Terms 1 and 2 of the Winter session (minimum 9 credits per term)
    • note: Students studying on a reduced course load and are registered with the Centre for Accessibility (Vancouver) or the Disability Resource Centre (DRC) are eligible to apply. Please contact our office when applying to notify.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative average of 65% (see here for details on how the Co-op Program calculates your cumulative average)
  • We do not accept students with Year Level / Class Standing 4
    • IMPORTANT! For 2024W admission only: We recognize that students may have chosen their courses for 23W based on a plan that would allow them to remain eligible for admission to the Co-op Program in 24W. If you have been promoted to Year Level / Class Standing 4 but under the Faculty’s previous promotion/advancement rules you would have been Year 3, you will be permitted to apply to the Co-op Program. You will receive an email from the Co-op Program in early August, with more information on how to proceed with your co-op application

In addition, you need to:

  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate co-op career motivation, maturity, professionalism, and readiness for growth
  • Show a willingness to relocate for co-op work terms
  • Commit to apply to a broad range of positions
  • Abide by the Applied Science Co-op Program Terms & Conditions

MASTER of ENGINEERING STUDENTS

  • MUST be commencing the Master of Engineering degree program in September 2024. Please contact our office if your program start date is deferred to January 2025. We do not accept MASc or PhD students
  • Must be registered as a full-time student for both Terms 1 and 2 of the Winter session
    • note: Students studying on a reduced course load and are registered with the Centre for Accessibility (Vancouver) or the Disability Resource Centre (DRC) are eligible to apply. Please contact our office when applying to notify.
  • Admission to the co-op program for Master of Engineering students at UBC Vancouver follows an ‘Open Admission’ policy. This means entry is non-competitive, and students who meet the criteria and apply by the deadline will be automatically accepted. MEng Vancouver students (except MEng Mining) will receive an email from the Co-op Program in August with instructions on how to join.
  • Master of Engineering students at UBC Okanagan and Biomedical Master of Engineering students are not required to apply for admission to the co-op program. Students in these programs will receive an email from the Co-op program in December with instructions on how to join co-op.
  •  In addition, you need to:

Application Process

  1. Complete online application: Application links for the Bachelor of Applied Science and Bachelor of Design self-enrolling Canvas course will be available August 2024.
  2. Successful admission: If you are successfully admitted, you will be notified by email and you are required to:
    i. Pay the co-op administration and workshop fee upon admission before you can attend the workshops
    ii. Participate in mandatory co-op workshops beginning October 2024
    iii. Apply for a co-op work permit (international students only)

Information sessions are for UBC Vancouver and Okanagan Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Engineering.
Bachelor of Design students will have one dedicated info session, and will be contacted with an invite.
No registration is required to attend.
