Graduate FAQ
Work Term Schedule
I changed my mind about job searching for summer and intend to have my first work term in the Fall. Is this possible?
Yes, please email the M.Eng Co-op Career Advisors to inform us of this change, as we will need to remove you from the summer job search.
I changed my mind and want to study in the fall instead of work. Is this possible?
Yes, while your schedule is currently set for 8 months (2 work terms), if you now wish to only work for the summer term, you will apply only for 4-month jobs.
If I accepted a summer job offer for 4 months and my employer offers me an extension to 8 or 12 months after I start the position, can I accept this offer?
Yes, if initially you accepted an offer for 4 months and your employer later offers you an extension to 8 or 12 months during your work term, you may accept the offer if you wish.
Similarly, if initially you accepted an offer for 8 months and your employer later offers you an extension to 12 months during your work term, you may accept the offer.
In both cases, if you receive a job offer for 12 months, before accepting the offer, it’s crucial to consider your schedule and ensure your plans align with returning to school after your co-op term(s). Additionally, you will need permission from both the Co-op Office and Faculty Advisor. If you find yourself in this situation, please contact the M.Eng. Co-op Career Advisors for further guidance.
Furthermore, while your schedule in the PD Portal is set to 4 or 8 months, when applying for jobs if you see a 12-month co-op opportunity that interests you, you are eligible to apply.
If I do not secure a summer job and opt to pursue studies in the fall rather than engage in another job search, is this a possible option?
Yes, if you do not secure a 4-month summer work term, you may choose to return to school in the fall, instead of searching for a fall job.
If I don’t secure a summer job, can I take courses over the summer?
Please consult your department to verify the availability of courses during the summer term.
If I secure a 4-month summer work term, can I return to school in the fall?
Yes, if you secure a 4-month summer work term, you will return to academics in the fall. You will be ineligible to engage in another job search to secure a different position for the fall.
Program Details and Requirements
After I complete my current work term(s), can I work for a different company?
MEng Co-op students are only eligible to work with a single company while in the co-op program, regardless of how many work terms they are scheduled. If provided the opportunity, a student may extend their work term with the same company up to a maximum total of 12 months (3 consecutive work terms), provided permission of the Co-Op Office and Faculty Advisor has been obtained. (Note: MEng Mechanical Engineering students can extend with the same company for up to a total of 8 months (i.e. two consecutive work terms)
Can I complete my M.Eng. degree while on a work term?
No. As a nationally accredited co-op program, all students in the co-op option, including MEng co-op students, must end their degree on an academic term.
Do the co-op work term credits count toward my degree program?
No, the co-op work term credits do not contribute to your degree requirements.
How can I update the tuition and fee amount listed in the Student Services Centre (SSC) to reflect my co-op term?
Once the Co-op Office has registered you in the co-op work term course, Student Services will modify your tuition billing, ensuring you're charged the co-op fee instead of the standard program tuition. To expedite this process, please ensure you are not enrolled in any additional courses before the term begins.
How do I enroll myself in the work term course and pay my co-op course fee once I have secured a job?
You do not enroll in the Co-op work term course. The Co-op office will enroll students in the appropriate course once you have a confirmed co-op position. The Co-op course fee, which is paid for each 4-month work term period, is applied to your UBC account upon registration. The Co-op work term fees are paid to UBC in the same method as your other tuition fees. For current fee information, please visit the UBC Calendar.
My co-op work term is outside of Metro Vancouver. How do I apply for a UPass/Compass card exemption?
The online exemption for UBC Vancouver students is through the request form available at the Student Service Centre (SSC). The exemption application deadline is the same as the withdrawal date without W standing for your courses. Get more information about U-Pass/Compass Card at UBC Planning.
During the Work Term
Can I extend my work term at the same company?
Yes, there is a possibility to extend your work term with the same company to a maximum of 12 months (Note: MEng Mechanical Engineering has an 8 month co-op maximum, i.e. a double work term). Can I take classes during a co-op work term?
The primary student goal during a work term is to gain valuable applied technical experience, and students are expected to give complete attention to their full-time employment. Speak with us if you’d like to further discuss this decision. If you are considering taking on a course, when discussing this with us, come prepared to discuss the class schedule, attendance requirements, potential conflicts with your work schedule, and other considerations to meet both academic and employment requirements.
What are the required deliverables for each work term? Is there an assignment I need to complete during this period?
Use the Work Term Checklist to stay on track with important deliverables and due dates during each work term. You must regularly review the checklist, to make sure you’ve completed the required tasks and are meeting the program requirements.
Will I receive a grade for the co-op work term course?
The co-op work term course follows a pass/fail grading system. To achieve a passing grade, you must successfully complete the work term assignment and obtain a positive performance evaluation from your supervisor (the Employer Evaluation at the end of the work term). Further information on the supervisor's evaluation can be found in Step 9 of the Work Term Checklist.
