Fouad Elgamal
Chemical & Biological Engineering
As a result of his achievements in the workplace as a co-op student, commitment to supporting his fellow applied science students, and positive experiences enriching classroom learning with industry learning, we are excited to announce that Fouad Elgamal is the 2023 UBC Applied Science Co-op Student of the Year recipient.
Fouad is an undergraduate student in the Chemical & Biological Engineering program in his fifth year at UBC. Fouad has specialized in battery development, working at both an established employer in the fuel cell field as well as most recently at Form Energy, a burgeoning start-up in renewable energy storage. Here, he designed and performed experiments to characterize new materials and proactively developed new methods that defined how the company performs their material research. From his supervisor, a Senior Battery Engineer: “characterization methods designed by Fouad are used every day by our team… to this day, I am still impressed with Fouad’s care in anticipating the needs of the team.” This led to Fouad delivering a never-before-made high-performance proof-of-concept embodiment, expanding the design space of the team. While on the UBC campus, Fouad may be recognized as a Co-op Peer Advisor or as the Captain of UBC Open Robotics, where he has taken multiple initiatives to support his peers in their own pursuits of valuable work experiences.
In my capacity as Captain of UBC Open Robotics, I assumed a proactive role in enlightening junior members about the advantages of co-op experiences and guiding them through the intricacies of the job search process. I organized a comprehensive three-part workshop series that covered essential aspects such as crafting impactful resumes, using LinkedIn effectively, and honing interview skills. This involved conducting multiple mock interviews and providing personalized feedback on resumes and cover letters. Drawing from the unique tactics I’ve honed in my own job searches, I share personal experiences and underscore the invaluable nature of the co-op program.
Expanding beyond my in-class learnings, I experienced success, challenges, and opportunities in very different company environments. I not only fostered technical skills in these areas, but also improved on my transferable soft skills. Returning to my education, I am better equipped and educated on the applications of my learnings and can more easily see the connection between classes and industry. As a co-op student, the experience of workplace learning through co-op education has significantly enriched my overall learning.”
