In this employer spotlight, we speak with Imperial, an integrated energy company with over a century of leadership in responsibly developing Canada’s energy resources. As one of the country’s largest producers of oil and natural gas and a major refiner and marketer of petroleum products, Imperial combines technology, innovation and industry expertise to power modern life across Canada.
What does your company do?
For more than 100 years, Imperial has been an industry leader in applying technology and innovation to develop Canada’s energy resources responsibly. As an integrated energy producer, the company explores, produces, refines and markets the products that empower modern living.
Being “integrated” means Imperial participates across every stage of the oil and gas value chain, from upstream exploration and production to transportation, refining, and the delivery of essential fuels and products Canadians rely on every day. Imperial’s business is also closely connected to research, innovation, community engagement, and operating safely and sustainably.
What is the culture like at your organization, and how do you support the professional growth of your employees and co-op students?
Imperial’s culture is built on collaboration, safety and a genuine commitment to learning. We encourage employees and students to take ownership of their development, supported by access to training, technical resources, and on‑the‑job learning opportunities. Co‑op students benefit from hands‑on work, guidance from experienced colleagues, and clear expectations that help them build confidence and capability.
Our early‑career programs provide structure and support through rotations, regular feedback, and exposure to different teams. We also place strong emphasis on building an inclusive workplace, including dedicated initiatives and networks that support Indigenous employees and help ensure a wide range of perspectives are reflected across our workforce.
What qualities or skills do you look for when hiring a co-op student?
We look for students who are motivated to learn, comfortable working with technical complexity, and ready to contribute in a team setting. Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to safety, and the ability to communicate clearly with colleagues across disciplines are especially valuable. We also appreciate students who step forward with ideas, take initiative, and adapt well in a dynamic work environment.
How do UBC co-op students contribute to your organization?

- Designing and certifying a 3D‑printed accessory for a common tool
- Developing a dashboard that organizes process‑equipment data and helps operations make faster, data‑driven decisions.
