As we welcome 2026, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on 2025 and celebrate our co-op students’ impressive achievements. Our annual Co-op Year in Review highlights employment data and statistics from the past year, shares feedback from both employers and students, and recognizes our 2025 Student of the Year.
Despite a slowdown in overall employment growth in Canada compared to the peaks of 2023–24, co-op work terms increased by 7% since 2024. We’re proud to share that 2025 saw the highest number of work terms secured in our program’s history. This growth reflects your dedication, adaptability, and resilience in a challenging job market, as well as employers’ continued confidence in the value you bring to their teams.
In fall 2025, the Co-op Program also welcomed 1392 new undergraduate students into the program. We’re excited to support an expanding group of students as they begin their career journeys.

Shout Outs!
Employers Love Hiring APSC Co-op Students
The UBC Applied Science Co-op Program provides highly skilled, motivated, and well-prepared students who make meaningful contributions to projects in both the short and long term. It has been an excellent way to identify and train potential future employees while also addressing immediate recruitment needs.
I highly recommend this program. It fosters a mutually beneficial relationship between students and companies; while students gain valuable hands-on experience and develop industry-relevant skills, companies benefit from fresh perspectives and additional support.
I have now supervised 3 undergraduate students as part of this co-op program and I am consistently impressed at the caliber of students. The co-op office make hiring very straightforward, and communication is clear and non-excessive. I really appreciate the co-op program."

Quotes From Students
I think the co-op program in it's foundation is very strong. There are a lot of opportunities, excellent resources, and brilliant individuals there to help you succeed. These 3 combined with the student's determination to learn, grow and improve is what makes getting a coop job almost guaranteed. Once a student gets a taste of a co-op job, they get to experience what they might be doing for a great portion of their life, they get to understand how things work in the real world beyond the theoretical learning in the classrooms. So I would definitely rate the UBC Applied Science Co-op Program very highly, as they truly prepare you for success."
Co-op has helped me grow, get to know myself better, and feel more comfortable expressing my personality in the workplace.
I would have felt so overwhelmed finding my first job as an International student, the co-op program makes all resources easily accessible and I truly think it helped paved my way for my future career."
Student of the Year
Congratulations to Juan Diego Balestrini Freundt Thurne, our 2025 Applied Science Co-op Student of the Year Award Winner! Juan Diego is an undergraduate student in Mechanical Engineering pursuing the mechatronics specialization. He completed two co-op work terms with Miru Smart Technologies working to upgrade mechanical engineering facilities, and most recently completed two co-op work terms with Red Rabbit working in robotics development for automated manufacturing. At Red Rabbit he was able to make impressive technical contributions, but also engage with company leaders to gain insight on product planning and business strategy, and even publicly represent the company at a trade show.
Within the UBC community, Juan Diego served as Captain of Open Robotics where he honed his robotics skills and applied learnings from his co-op experiences. He took initiative to support teammates with their co-op goals by organizing resume and interview workshops for his peers, and even made connections between his co-op network and UBC to promote students for future opportunities. From his supervisor at Red Rabbit: “JD’s impact at Red Rabbit Robotics went far beyond his defined co-op role. Through his mentorship, outreach, and community building efforts, JD has made a lasting impact not only on our organization but also on how we engage future engineers.”
Congratulations, Juan Diego!
